DELHI:  A series of road show is going to be held by the government, which will invite companies to bid for the important tunnel ‘Zojila Pass’ which is meant to provide connectivity to Ladakh in all weather conditions.

Out of this single bidder situation, the government hopes to gain enough interest in the Rs. 9,000 crore project to avoid any arising controversy. But so far, only one country has got roped in for the project after Border Roads Organization, the road transport and the highway replicas omega ministry floated tenders since 2013. Earlier, by following all the guidelines, the NDA government had gone ahead with the single bid on the forth occasion. But the ministry had cancelled the bid.

Today, the NHIDCL is a completely owned company of the highway ministry and has been tasked to bid out and manage the mammoth project. The chief of NHIDCL, Mr. Anand Kumar said, “"This is the first time we are reaching out to the companies with road shows where we are trying to allay their concerns. We held one such road show in Delhi, second one is being held in Hyderabad on Friday and the third one will be in Mumbai. This is a difficult project from an execution point of view because it’s located in the most hostile region.”

The Cabinet approved this plan of building the 14 km single tube and two way tunnel in October, 2013. Considering the region's experiences where heavy snowfall often forces the area to remain disconnected from the rest of the country for up to six months, the companies want the construction period to be increased to 8-9 years against the present condition of seven years.

To ensure that there is no delay in the completion, the project will be built under annuity mode. It will also have a parallel escape tunnel with cross passage for both pedestrians and vehicles at regular intervals as it is designed as one of the modern tunnels with a speed of 80 kmph.
