OVERVIEW

Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon), or Chandra Tal, is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas. Mountains of scree overlook the lake on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. Situated in the Spiti part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India),Chandra Taal is a popular destination for trekkers and campers. Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are the camping sites. During springtime, these meadows are carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wildflowers.The lake is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau, which overlooks

the Chandra River.

 

Baralachala means summit with cross roads from Spiti, Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahaul meet here and in ancient times it was part of a trade route. On the North West lies the Bhaga River while the Chandra flows South East. Near below the Baralacha-la is having a beautiful emerald lake the Suraj tal (Sun lake), the source of the river Bhaga.

 

 ITINERARY

 

DAY 01 : Manali - Chikka (29600m) Trek/14km

 

Situated on a long grassy bank, sloping down from the cliffs, it is an ideal location for the end of the day’s march.The impressive grandeur of immediate surroundings, the nearness of the Tokru-Shakru peaks, the wonderfull colouring of the rock and mountain side, the deep purple of the early morning shade and the golden glories of the setting sun constitute this halting place.O/N Camp at Chikka.

 

DAY 02: Chikka – Chhatru (3350m) Trek/16km

 

Over Hamta pass at a height of 4268M in the Lahaul valley distanct and massive mountains dominate and landscope their serrated peakes silhouetted against the blue horizon.Close views of deo tibba and fabled Indrashan peaks.O/N Camp at Chhatru.

 

DAY 03: Chhatru – Chhota Drara (3750 m) Trek/16 km

 

 walk through rugged valley.Chhota Drara is a beautiful camp site.O/N Camp at Chhota Drara.

 

DAY 04: Chhota Drara – Batal (3960 m) Trek/16 km

 

Batal is situated at the foot of Kunzum Pass which provides the main approach to Spiti and Lahaul valley.The panorama as viewed from the top of the pass is enthralling and inspiring.On the way to Bara Shhingri glaciers the view of the Shhingri stream emerging from beneath a huge iridescent archway of solid ice is a never-to be forgotten sight.Behind the height.The glacier is mountainous mass of solid ice more the a kilometer wide and extending over the distance of ten kilometer.O/N Camp at Batal.

 

DAY 5: Batal – Chandratal (4270M)/ 18km 


Chandratal means the lake of moon.This lake of exgusiting beauty is set on a large meadow of endeweiss between a lower ridge and the main kunzum range with an outlet in to Chandra river. A beautiful view of the Samudra Tapoo glacier and of mulkila range is obtainable.O/N Camp near by Chandratal lake side.

 

DAY 5: Chandratal– Tokpo Yonma (4320M)/ 12km 

 

After breakfast we start trek to Tokpo Yonma.O/N camp at Yonma.

 

Day 6 : Tokpo Yongma – Congma (4640m)/ 11km

 

After breakfast we start trek to Congma.O/N Camp at Congma

 

Day 7 : Tokpo Yongma – Baralacha (4833)/ 10KM

 

Early start recommended after Baralacha we drive back to Zispa by Jeep.O/N Stay at Camp at Zispa.

 

 Day 8 : Zispa – Manali

 

After breakfast we drive back to Manali by jeep.Lunch enroute.An evening we reach Manali.O/N Manali.
