Kalavantin Durg or Kalavantin Fort, as it is popularly known as, is a beautiful trekking destination located between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra. The lush green beauty of the area attracts both nature lovers and adventure seekers in great numbers to enjoy a relaxing trek to the top of the rocky plateau on which the fort is located. Even though the trek can be completed during day time, most participants prefer the night trek option to enjoy the mesmerizing sight of the fireflies festival At Kalavantin Durg.
This festival, which incidentally is a natural phenomenon, is one of the major attractions of this 2 days and 1 night long trekking trip. As the participants make their way to the top by maneuvering the chilling steep climb over a rocky terrain, they motivated to go on by the mere idea of witnessing and event that will leave them mesmerized. During the fireflies festival, which occurs during the pre-monsoon period, the participants enjoy the sight of hundreds of fireflies and glow worms gathering together on a tree in pursuit of a mate. The bio-luminiscent lights emitted by the countless insects create a warm glow around the tree which is a sight to behold in the dark and dense surroundings.
It is the appeal of this beautiful and memorable phenomenon that drives countless adventure enthusiasts to undertake the Kalavantin Durg trek during the pre-monsoon season. The fact that they get to enjoy the beauty of some of the most astounding naturally attractive sights along with an opportunity of exploring an ancient fort is just an added bonus. The trek proves to be beyond any expectation for most participants.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TREK
Day 01 : Depart by Local Train & reach Panvel by 06:30 pm. On arrival at Panvel, we will proceed towards Thakurwadi village in Tumtum(auto rickshaws : 8 seater). Have introduction and briefing round. Freshen-up and start ascending. Enjoy the glowing fireflies while ascending till Prabalmachi. We are staying at the villager’s homestay at Prabalmachi village and will have simple homely local food in dinner. Post dinner, wander around for a short night trail for Fireflies activity. Overnight at Prabalmachi.
Day 02 : Morning freshen up at Prabalmachi village followed by breakfast and hot cup of tea. Post breakfast climb atop to visit Kalavantin fort & enjoy the scenic view from the top. After some happening photography session on the top of pinnacle, descend down to Prabalmachi. Lunch at Prabalmachi village and then start descending towards Thalurwadi. Further back to Panvel by local transport. Reach Mumbai by 4 pm.
