The Malana Trek

Apart from the rich geographical, botanical and resource diversity which India has been blessed with, there are other reasons as well which have encouraged travelers from across the world to visit and explore this mystical landmass in south-east Asia. India has always been an amalgamation of cultures and varied ways of living, and looks like an endless abyss to an explorer on the look-out for newer experiences. There have always been stories about some of the most unheard of living styles in the remote parts of the country, which has grabbed attention of adventure seekers across the world. Another well talked about story from the book of mysteries and awe that is India is the small forgotten village in the Highlands of the state of Uttaranchal, called Malana. The village is like a protected community in itself, lying landlocked between towering peaks and beautiful valleys ornated with flowers, streams and vast spans of lush green. It is perhaps this very landlocked and protected location of the village which has provided itself like an incubation space for the breeding of a self-reliant social and ecological way of living in Malana.  The village is located on the side valley of the main valley cut by the Parvati River, in the lap of the valley called ‘Malana Nala’.

This village is perhaps yet another example which stands witness in terms of the cultural diversity owing to foreign influence through trade and invasion, which India has been receiving throughout it’s historical record. It is fabled that the village stands since as long as the time when the great Greek conqueror Alexander invaded India, and some of his men stayed back to dwell in these beautiful valleys, constituting the village community. This is what gives the village this mystical feel and encourages trekkers to experience the wonders of visiting it.
