Detailed Itinerary
Day 01: Haridwar to Joshimath
Trekkers will have to reach Joshimath from Haridwar by road. The town is 250 kms from Haridwar. The real trekking expedition will start from Jumma. You cannot reach Jumma from Haridwar directly. Hence, it is advised to stop at Joshimath on the first day. If you choose to initiate from Haridwar in the morning, you can visit, while passing, few famous places like Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Karnprayag.
The town Joshimath is also known as Jyotirmath and it is believed it to be one of the four 'maths' or prime foundations set up by the legendary Adi Shankara. Few spots that can be visited if time is on hand here are Badrinarayan and Rajeshwari devi temples in Shankaracharya Math, the dual avatar temple of Lord Vishnu - Narsinh temple, Bhavishya Kedar temple, Gari Bhawani temple and Tapovan, a place famous for its natural production of hot water springs. Guest houses are available for the night stay.
Day 02: Joshimath to Jumma & trek to ruin village (3 kms, 9, 180 ft)
The trek would start from Jumma village that is an hour drive from Joshimath. It is located on the Joshimath-Malari highway. Necessary items for the trek like kerosene and groceries have to be purchased from Joshimath as the next shopping stop would be in Ruing village. Even there, chances of getting the entire list of items are less. The drive to Jumma village is not a smooth one. Tapovan, Reni, Lata, Suraithota and Phagti are few small villages which will fall on the way. From Suraithota, the road journey will take a pleasant turn; the roads will be smoother and the gushing Dhulaiganga River will be a convivial site to watch.
The trek starts by crossing steel over bridge suspended above the river. Since, Jumma is situated in the Tibetan border; you will be welcomed by a sharp and fierce wind that will literally blow you off your feet. The road will be a mild ascent thereafter. The ascent is an easy one and in no time you will reach the Ruing village. It will take about three hours to reach and the distance covered will be three kilometers. There are two options for camping for the night; by gaining permission from the local villagers and camp at the panchayat ghar or if not lucky enough, walk 3 kms kilometers further and reach a grassy clearing that is located at the base of the Dronagiri mount.
Day 03: Ruing Village to Dronagiri Village (8 kms, 11, 844 ft)
Camping at the base of the Dronagiri Ascent has two main advantages; you will get closer to Dronagiri and confer the amazing climb through the landslide, and a clear stream that passes by the camp site also makes it a perfect place for camping. The track is similar to the previous day, a windy path sometimes going up and sometimes down. The road goes through a forest and is the sole track. Getting lost here is out of question. You can easily trace your way alone.
The landslide zone is couple of minutes away. Two distinct tracks is noticed here. The one downward trail is safer to walk as the track that leads upward is vestige of the main trail but was destroyed by a massive glacier and it needs expertise and sure footed trekkers to walk in the area. The downward trail is a muddy and dusty track, little streams crisscrossing the path. A cemented pavement will come in to view few kilometers after, which will lead the way to the Ruing village. The scenery that waits for us is magnificent. The view is nothing less than the landscapes of Swiss Alps. The snow clad peaks of the pristine Hathi Parvat and Ghori Parvat definitely will take your mind away from the tiredness of the long day. The place looks even better in the summer months with beautiful blossoms covered the entire landscape. The change of scenario cannot be expressed by words; one minute you will be walking amidst paradise and the next moment reality of the Dronagiri village comes in view. The entire village is deserted with little or no signs inhabitants and the houses are clear ramshackle. Camps can be set on the outskirts of the village that is lit by solar lights. You can visit the Bhumial God temple, few minutes from the village, as well. The Dronagiri Mountains are visible from the camp site.
Day 04: Dronagri village to Langatoli (4 kms, 12,464 ft)
A high ridge is reached though a meandering pass initially. The first site of Rishi peak is visible from the ridge. Bagini Nala is also seen from here. 30 minutes from the village the road will take you to a concrete bridge over the Bagini Nala, which is supposed to be crossed. Take the right hand trail from the point as the left one leads to kanari Khal, thence to Garpak village. The right trail is twisty and filled with big boulders everywhere, diminishing any trace of vegetation. An hour and half later, a grassy land will be reached which is an idle place for camping. A stream passes by the grassy patch of land which is crystal clear and can be used for refreshment.
Longatulli camping ground is the next stop. It will take an hour of steady walk to reach the grounds. People who are not used to long trekking choose this place as their night camp site. Bagini lower base camp is reached after a sound 3 hours hike on rocky trail from Longatulli. Bagini lower camp site is a plain plateau. Few stunning peaks that can be observed from this place are Satminal, Hardeul and Rishi pahar. The Bagini main base camp is further up the mountains. You can either camp here or at another better place forty five minutes from here. It is called the Advanced Bagini base camp. The route to this place is not very well marked. A better vision and careful observation is required to locate and follow the trail. Few signs like cluster of pebbles positioned on top of one another are made for fellow trekkers for better navigation.

The journey from here will be a monotonous one. You will have to go down the same route you choose to come up to the Base camp. A distance of 9 kms will be covered this day, but since it will be a descent; it is unlikely to feel tired and lose strength. Dronagiri village will be reached via Longatulli thence to Ruing village. An early start would help to achieve the day's destination. Night camps can be set in Ruing village again.
Day 08: Dronagri village to Joshimath.
Joshimath is the destination of day 8. Reach Joshimath following the same old route. The descent will hardly take three hours to reach Jumma village. From Jumma again a vehicle ride will take you to Joshimath. This trek if observed is done in a circular form; start and finish point in Joshimath. The Night can be spent in one of the guest houses; perfect time to relax your mind and body and envisage the last seven days of pure joy and achievement.
Day 09: Joshimath to Haridwar
