It has been three years now that Rohtang Pass for Lahaul Spiti and now the 8.8 kilometers tunnel is all set to be complete. The delay has been for three years and everyone has been eagerly waiting for the pass as it will give room for convenience.
The project idea was developed in the year 1983 but it got its launch in the year 2010. The completion year had to be 2019. The tunnel starts at Dhundi which is in Kullu and the end is at Gufa hotel which is close to Sissu, in the district of Lahaul-Spiti.
The excavation is not complete yet and only after the completion of the excavation, the two corners will be joined. It has been declared that at least one metre of the tunnel will undergo excavation in the presence of the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharam, on the 24th of October.
The good news is that not more than 4 meters of the tunnel is yet to be excavation for the completion of the project. The breakthrough will take one blast or two at the max for the long held project to come to a completion. An Engineer of Border Roads Organisation or BRO expressed his opinion.
The two portals are in Kullu and Lahaul. As per the engineer, the two points will join soon. Once the Rohang Pass is complete in the year 2019, it will be the longest tunnel in the country.
The tunnel after the completion will reduce the distance between Manali and Keylong. Both are the district headquarters of the district Lahaul. Moreover, 48 kms is not less for anyone to save time. Someone willing to reach there need not cross Rohtang pass.
The diversion of the road to the tunnel will start from Manali-Leh highway, which is at a distance of 9 km from Manali. This will, in the end join Gufa hotel located in Sissu.
The Tribal population of the area will have no bounds to their happiness as they will, now be connected with the rest of the country easily. In case of emergency, the tunnel will be opened especially in case of medical emergency. This is an exception because the tunnel will otherwise have its inauguration in winter. Detail work of the tunnel like fire safety, security points, telephone booths etc. are yet to be accomplished. Only after the completion, the tunnel will be open for general communication.
The central government also expresses its interest in constructing three more such tunnels for the ease of living of the general public. The Rohtang Pass is also a great endeavor to encourage and boost tourism because the Indian Army will have ease of access to countries like Pakistan and China.
Brigadier Khushal Thakur (retd. Kargil war hero) told that they had faced a lot of problems with the Jojilla pass and Rohtang Pass which would get blocked during winters. Now, the new tunnel, by cutting short the distance will not only make it convenient for the general public but the soldiers too.
Everyone is waiting eagerly for the tunnel to be completed and the same was expressed by Bir Singh, the President of Lahaul hoteliers association. The sight of the snow covered Lahaul Valley will also be a treat to the eyes.
