The undulating lowland of the North Konkan coast forms a narrow strip between the Arabian Sea and the often daunting west facing slopes of the Ghats. There are occasional good beaches, scattered mangrove swamps, and rice growing valleys, interspersed with poor laterite covered hills. The beaches to the north, a two-hour journey away, make them a popular getaway from Mumbai, although foreign tourists are virtually unheard of. The beaches can't compare to those of Goa or Kerala and litter and other debris is all too evident.
