When people think of adventure trekking, the first place which crosses our mind is Himalayas. Himalayan mountain ranges are used frequently for trekking and mountaineering. Leh, Ladhak and Jammu & Kashmir are the places where most of the trekking expeditions are originated.
Leh, lying amidst the mountain passes of Himalayas and the Karakoram Range has excellent trekking opportunities. Few of the popular treks in Leh are Indus valley trek, Changthang trek, Markha valley trek, Zansar trek, Monasteries Trek etc.
But the most blood gushing, exciting and challenging trek in this region is the trek Stok Kangri peak. Stok Kangri is at an amazing height of 20, 182 ft (6, 153 m) and is the highest mountain in the Stok Range of Himalayas. It is 24 kms from the district of Leh. Even though the trek is the most glamorous one, it is by no means an easy trek. Only very few people who attempt, succeed to reach the Stok Kangri Peak. People from all over the world come here to endeavor this amazing trek to the summit.
The only reason this trek is considered a difficult one is due to the height of the destination, which is almost 70% of the Mt. Everest. And by no likelihood you can finish the trek in 5 days. Many people suggest completing the journey in five days to reduce the cost. But this might be dangerous as your body needs a proper acclimatization. The level of oxygen reduces significantly as you mount higher. And if your body is not prepared for the dramatic change in weather, then the trek might be trying and exhausting and you might as well return without completing it. Thus, two days is further added to the itinerary. The best months to go for the Stok Kangri Peak trek are July through September.
Whenever we talk of Ladhak, a striking, rocky, snow clad and population free mountain place comes to our mind. Ladhak is the only place in India which has preserved its ancient beauty and culture. One of the adventurous sports which you can highly cherish is trekking in Ladakh. The place has many scenic locations and vast meadows adorned with multicolored flowers albeit the speculation of it being a dry place.
Stok Kangri peaks are trekked by many people and is considered the best trekking experience in the Himalayan Mountains of Ladhak. Trekkers flock from different parts of the world just to trek here. Stok Kangri is the highest mountain range of the Himalayas in Ladhak region. The best season to go trekking in Ladhak is July, August and September. The place is usually dry in these months with few bursts of rains in July and august. The nearest station to Stok Kangri is Leh. Leh can be reached from Delhi by air or from Manali or Srinagar by road.
The Stok Kangri Peak trek is considered one of the most challenging treks on Himalayan Mountains. The final altitude that is achieved in the trek is 20, 080 ft, which is almost 70% height of the Mount Everest. One must be mentally and physically fit and prepared to attain this trek. Most people return from the base camp of stok kangri without even completing the last leg to Stok Kangri summit. People try to complete this trek in five days. But this is potentially risky because of many obvious reasons. Oxygen level substantially decreases in the summit and if your body is not properly acclimatized, the climb would be exhausting and difficult. Therefore, a nine days trek is recommended by experienced trekkers. There are few mandatory preparations to be made before starting the trek, which will be announced by your guide.
The Stok Kangri Description:
First day: from Delhi to Leh by air. Second day is dedicated only for acclimatization. The process is done in the district of Leh. Following your guide is essential, as he will tell the procedure. The fourth day destination will be Mankorma camp site from Chang Ma. Mankorma Mountains are purple in color and are fascinating to look at. It is situated at 14, 200 ft above sea level. You will reach the Stok Kangri base camp, one of the largest trekking base camps, the following day, i.e. 5th day. This is situated at 16, 300 ft. Again on day 6 a rest cum training day would be observed. Training with tools and equipments is done followed by a good sleep.
