Mountains are one of the most awe inspiring and queer features formed on the face of this earth. This is because of the unique experience they offer to people who want to test their will and potential to the limits, and also to those who love to feel close to nature and experience it in bountiful glory. Trekking is one activity which can be done in these mountains, and bundles in itself a conglomerate of both fun, serenity and adventure. The Himalayas offer ample opportunities to trek and reach just drop dead gorgeous places to inquisitive trekkers. The Chandrashila sitting atop Tungnath is one such trek which has well been the experience of a lifetime for trekkers who have visited before.
The trek commences from Ukhimath, which is the resting place of the Hindu revered deities of Badrinath and Kedarnath, during the winter months in the region. For here it heads towards Chopta, and finally commences the hike to the steep but glorious Tungnath peak. Chandrashila is effectively the summit of the Tungnath peak, and literally translates into the ‘rock of the moon’ in Hindi. Fables and legends surround this mysterious mountain which sits right in the vicinity of major Himalayan peaks. It is said that post the epic battle in the Ramayana, it was this very mountain atop which Lord Ram meditated and pondered upon, post slaying King Ravana. Another legend connects the Chandrashila peak to the moon god, who is supposed to have been in penance here.
The trek to Chandrashila can even be undertaken by novice trekkers, and has a lot to offer in terms of witnessing Himalayan beauty. Major Himalayan peaks such as Kedar Peak, Nanda Devi, Trisul etc. can be closely experienced from the top of the hill, which is an enchanting and humbling experience in itself.
