The trek of Bara Bhangal is different from the rest of the treks located in the Himalayan range because during the trekking at Bara Bhangal, the participants can find no traces of the local people who have made this location as their abode. The trail of Bara Bhangal passes through a small hamlet and the participants get to spend most of the time with each other, walking through the different types of flora and fauna. The participants are required to climb up the mountains in order to cross a pass and then descend downwards in order to climb upward another pass. The commencement of the trek is situated near the beautiful hill station of Manali and the trekkers get the definite opportunity to glance through the various landscapes that not only test their physical strength, but also tells a lot about the mental strength.
The trek of Bara Bhangal is a 13 day long trek that allows the trekkers to spend some of the memorable days of their lives in the scenic regions situated in the upper reaches of the Himalayan range. The trail from Kullu Valley up to Kangra valley has a moderate level of difficulty and the trekkers are required to traverse across glaciers, dense cover of coniferous forests, meadows and rocky barren pieces of land. On each day of this trip, the trekkers are going to experience something different and something truly amazing. Without any qualms, we claim that the trekkers start wondering about the spotless beauty which the nature has in the ranges of Himalayas.
This trek of Bara Bhangal of is a treat for those bunch of trekkers who possess a fair experience in the arena of trekking and maintains a good physical and mental strength. Day 1: Arrive Manali (2050 M) – Inderahara
In the early hours of the morning, after crossing the Pandoh Dam, which is located in Himachal Pradesh, the road will move along the River Beas. After passing the Kullu Valley, the trekkers can take the first glimpse of the snow kissed mountains in the Morning. After reaching Manali, check-in to a good hotel will take place. This day the participants can spend enjoying by indulging in the locally available places and markets.
Day 2: Manali to Lamadugh (2994 M 4 to 5 hrs)
Post breakfast, the participants are required to trek right from the Hidamba Temple which is situated at a distance of 2.5 Km from Manali where night stay was arranged. The participants need to climb through the dense cover of the Deodar forest stretching for around 3 Km and then reach a rocky patch from where Manali can still be viewed. Immediately above this point is situated a meadow, before a steep ascent of nearly 400 m, passing through oak trees, conifer trees and a number of tiny pastures. The gradient turns to become gentler as we approach the campsite at a distance of 2920m.
Lamadugh (2920m) is a beautiful meadow adorned with oak, maple and spruce. The silver birch strands can be seen on the upper hillside. Overnight stay is arranged at the camp.
Day 3: Lamadugh to Riyali (3300 M 6 to 7 hrs)
The trail ascends at this point through the ridge which is situated below the region of Tanpari Tibba. One can see some of the untouched views of the nature in North towards the Rohtang and Solang valley. This ascent is gradual, enthralling and long covering a distance of 6001m and opens views across Deo Tibba and Hamta valley.
After hiking for a span of 4 to 5 hours, you will reach the highest point of the ridge and from there the trail starts heading South after crossing a number of ridges. This is followed by a long descent that takes the participants to an intermediate valley and one of the significant sides of this trail. From here, a gradual movement for about 3 km will take the participants from the oak forest to a beautiful meadow which is locally called Riyali. Overnight stay and food arrangements are made at the camp.
Day 4: Riyali to Kali Yahni Base Camp (4480 M 5 to 6 hrs)
The trail moves above the river course and then gradually descends itself to the floor of the beautiful valley. In about 2 hours, the stream will be crossed and one needs to climb a number of grassy ridges and pass through the various quarters of shepherds. Towards the East, the views of Himalayan peaks an Chanderkhani pass can be easily viewed. Overnight camping is arranged there only.
Day 5: Base Camp to Dhanku Thach via Kali Yahni Pass (4640 M 8-9 hrs.)
The trail will go for a transition; from the meadows and forests present, the trail will move to reach some rocky grounds that are covered with snow patches. The Kali Yahni Pass is a steep and long pass having an altitude of 4610m. After crossing the broad glacier and moving down the moraine as well as the valley, the location where the arrangement of camping is done will be reached. Overnight stay at campsite only.
Day 6: Dhanku Thach to Lomba Parao (3132 M 4 to 5 hrs)
The day 6 can be concluded in two ways, totally at the wish of the participants.
The first option is to trek the trail down to the shepherd's valley and then go alongside the stream after crossing a bridge and then the camp will be reached.
Another option is to traverse through the ridge alongside the stream having lots of ups and downs. Here the participants may even be required to cross the various glacial streams.
Day 7: Lomba Parao to Dadh Marhi (3850 M 5 to 6 hrs)
The participants are required to move down the hill moving across a number of large and loosely held rocks for a span of nearly two hours. Then a half an hour climbing, followed by crossing the stream and then another half an hour of walk on the upper hill will be done. Once the participants are done with this, there is an easy walk to reach the camp situated in a grassy meadow. Overnight stay for the participants will be arranged at the meadow camp only.
Day 8: Dadh Marhi to Bara Bhangal (2524 M 6 to 7hrs)
The terrain which the participants will face on Day 8 is similar to what they had the previous day. They will be required to move along the hillside facing the valley. Then, a long and slowly descending trail will lead to the Bara Bhangal village. While moving across this trail, the participants can glance through the forest covered with trees of blue pine, silver birch and rhododendron. The final descent of nearly 500-600m is a dusty and steep one. Overnight stay arrangements are made either in a camp or at the forest rest house.
Day 9: Rest Day
Day 10: Bara Bhangal to Madh (3656 M 6 to 7 hrs)
The participants are required to cross the bridge flowing over the river from the Kali Yahni pass and from there a steep ascent of 400 m will commence. After continuing towards the right for about 3 Km, the broad glacial valley will emerge. At this point comes the slow ascent across the steep sloped and open meadows. The participants will move forward on this trail to witness a beautiful waterfall towards their right and from there they are required to cross the river and reach the different meadows which are referred to as Madh.
From this place one can indulge in fine viewing of Pir Panjal range and Mani Mahesh Kailash. Overnight stay at the camp.
Day 11: Madh to Panhartu via Thamsar Pass (4624 M 8 -9 hrs)
Slowly, the trail climbs up and passes through the valley and glacier situated in the East. After trekking of 3-4 km, the participants will be climbing steep rocky field for the purpose of reaching the glacial lake. The trail continues to move above the steep slope that leads to another glacial lake and base of the Pass.
Once the participants cross the snowfield, they reach a significant ridge line, i.e. the crest of Thamsar Pass and Dhaula Dhar Range. A few steps descending from the pass will lead to a beautiful glacial lake at a distance of 4370m. From there, a steep down will lead to a meadow situated in the region names Panhartu at a distance of 3390m. Overnight stay and camp at the same location.
Day 12 : Panihardu to Palachak (2770 M 6 hrs)
For a stretch of 2 km to 3 km, the trail descends traversing through various snow bridges for reaching a well constructed trail. The trail emerges amidst a mixed forest cover that includes oak, spruce and rhododendron trees and moves down to reach Palachak which has an altitude of 2500m.
A few dhabas are located here during the summer months; so if you are visiting during the summers, you can enjoy a cup of tea and some basic food at this place.
Day 13:Palachak to Billing (2400 M 7hrs)
Day 13 begins at Palachak; the participants are required to move across the metal bridge and move through the dense forest cover to reach the fields covered with potatoes, corns and beans near the region of Rajgundha. From Rajgundha, the trail will continue to move towards the right to reach the famous Uhi Valley, crossing forests laden with Oak, spruce and rhododendron trees.
After moving for another 4 to 5 km, the trail will head around the contours and the alpine ridge to reach Billing.
From Billing, a smooth network of transport services of car and jeep is available for travelling to Bir. The distance between Bir and Billing is a mere 4 km, which can be easily covered by road.
