One of the most popular adventure laden destination amidst the mountain ranges situated in Himachal Pradesh is the Kareri Lake trek. The Kareri Lake trek is the perfect trekking destination for those who wish to enjoy the thrill of trekking along with the beautiful and pristine views of the nature. The Kareri Lake trek is an easy trekking destination; this is the reason the destination is popular amongst those who are undertaking their first time trekking experience. Apart from the first timers, this destination also happens to be a favourite destination for the experienced and expert trekkers who wish to take a break from the challenging and difficult trek and get on to something easy and soothing. The Kareri Lake trek is often seen as a trailer by those who are desirous of conquering the Himalayan peaks as this trek offers a gist of the various challenges that one might face while traversing through various mountain peaks of the Himalayan range.
The initiation point for this trek is situated near the mystic town of Mcleodganj and it takes you straight to Kareri village which is a small yet beautiful hamlet situated at an altitude of 5,906 feet above the sea level. The trekking trail will take the participants through various dense forests of pine trees and a great number of small and quiet villages; thus providing the trekkers with a definite opportunity to see, understand and experience the lifestyle followed by locals of this location. The upward trek from Kareri will make the participants trek across the different ridges and beautiful forests covered with oak trees. There is a wooden bridge which is used for the purpose of crossing the Kareri Nallah; the bridge is constructed by the local people of the village. There is a lot of fun and enjoyment in crossing the wooden bridge in order to reach the other point. This adds to the thrill factor of the Kareri Lake trek.
Once the participants reach the Kareri Lake, they are almost spellbound to see the beauty of the surroundings that envelops them. The participants have the choices of either enjoying the fun of camping at Kareri Lake, Dharamshala or keeping in continuity with trekking in order to reach the upper reaches of the Dhauladhar ranges. The Kareri Lake area is often used as a base camp for initiating the trekking expeditions into the Dhauladhar ranges, Bharmour and Chamba. The best part about the trekking trail that leads to Kareri Lake is the fact that the entire route offers various views of the serene and scenic beauty of the various peaks of Himayalan ranges. As the participants will move up, they will gain an opportunity to view the different snow kissed peaks of the Himalayan ranges; the view of these mountains is capable enough in filling the hearts of the participants with a new kind of energy, joy and motivation to move forward and do better in life as a whole.
Route : Mcleodganj - kareri village - kareri lake
The trekking trail of Kareri Lake ascends through remote trekking trails which have a beautiful and magnificent cover of forests. Also, one can find a number of Hindu villages on this trekking trail which is yet not connected with road and are thus untouched. The Kareri Lake is also considered as an ideal base for trekking further in order to explore the upper reaches of Dhauladhar range with an aim to view the Kangra valley and take glimpses of the various snow capped peaks of the Himalayas particularly beyond Pir Panjal.
Daywise Itinerary
Day 1: Mcleodganj - Kareri village (1870m) Trek/13km
The trek traverses through a widespread cover of the pine forests which not only look elegant but also fills the heart of the trekkers with joy. One is also expected to cross a number of tribal villages and Kareri, in itself is a tribal village. On the first day, the participants should be prepared to trek nearly 13 km in order to reach Kareri village from Mcleodganj. The night stay will take place either in the village houses or in tents.
Day 2: Kareri village to Kareri Lake (3250m) Trek/14 km
While trekking on the Kareri Lake trek, the participants can easily take the views of the mixed forests comprising of pine forests, oak forests and rhododendron trees. The first 2 km of the trekking trail is all about a level walk, which is followed by a steep ascent along the Kareri Nallah stream which needs to be crossed by the participants over a great number of times using the wooden bridge made by the local people of Kareri village. Thus, a travel of 14 km will take the participants to Kareri lake. The night stay for the participants is arranged at the banks of Kareri lake.
Day 3: Kareri Lake to Guna Temple (2400 m) Trek/14 km
Once the participants reach the Kareri lake, if they wish to go further, they are required to trek in a steep descent traversing through the dense forest cover in order to reach Guna temple. The approximate distance between Kareri lake and Guna temple is 14 km.
Day 4: Guna Temple to Mcleodganj back
By returning back from Guna temple to Mcleodganj, the trekking expedition comes to a beautiful end.
Important information
Transport options- Delhi- Mcleodganj- Delhi
All the modes of transportation- road, rail and air is available for travelling to Delhi from Mcleodganj and vice versa. If you are travelling by air mode, then the closes airport located in the vicinity is the Gaggal DHM or Kangra Aiport or Dharamshala Airport. There are a considerable number of flights from Delhi to these airports.
Also, there are is a frequent bus service available at the location. Apart from the Public buses which run here, there are volvos that are doing rounds between Delhi and Mcleodganj. The cost of bus travel is quite economical- INR 550-900 per person. The buses start from Majnu ka tilla in Delhi at a time interval of 30 minutes and reach Mcleodganj in about 12 hours and also take the same number of hours while travelling back.
If the participants wish to travel via private vehicle, the same can also be arranged in the form of a taxi or cab. The taxi will take a little less time in comparison to buses in reaching Mcleodganj. However, the cost of the travelling by private vehicle will be a little high. Hence, prefer the private vehicle for travelling only if you are travelling with a huge group.
