Several people have successfully scaled Mount Everest worldwide. But, what can be said as an extra ordinary achievement, a Gurkha soldier has made history by not only standing on the world’s highest peak twice, but also scaling the top of two other mountains above 8000 m within record five days!

Nirmal Purja, a Gurkha soldier, is a permanent resident of Myagdi district. According to the expedition organizers and officials, Nirmal Purja scaled Mt. Everest twice and also climbed Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Makalu. Makalu, a savage mountain is said to be tougher than Mt. Everest. Mt. Lhotse another 8,000 m peak is always seen alongside Everest.

The 34 year old climber first climbs Mt. Everest, then climbs it again, then scales Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m) within just eight hours of his second ascent to Mt. Everest. If that was not enough, he left for Mt Makalu (8,485 m) on May 30 from Mt Everest base camp. “Purja and three Sherpa climbers successfully stood atop the world’s fifth highest mountain at 9:20 am on June 1,” Nivesh Karki, Manager at Seven Summit Treks, shared.

Nirmal Purja is a sergeant of the Gurkha Engineer in British Army. He was one of the three expedition members who opened a summit route to the roof of the world, Mt. Everest at 2:21 pm. If proven to be true, Purja would be first person to achieve the unique record of replicas relojes climbing and reaching the top of three 8,000+ m in just five days. “DoT has already asked the expedition organizers and the climber to submit all details to issue the summit certificates,” Adhikari said.

In 2016, Purja was one of the rescuers who helped other climbers in need to safely descend from the Mt. Everest death zone.
