Manali – Leh highway, a ride on this heavenly road is on every road trippers bucket list. Each year, 1000’s of people hire bikes from Manali to ride it all the way till Leh, Ladakh.

The government's order not to permit rented private bikes on the Manali-Leh road came as a blow to all the bike rental companies. A notice signed by Manali sub-divisional magistrate was passed across the state stating that state bikers headed for Leh will not be issued permits to cross Rohtang Pass, as bikes are not commercial vehicles.

Ran by small operators, this industry is worth several crores. They have already accepted bookings from domestic and foreign tourists for this season. The operators say they are in a spot because Himachal Pradesh does not register two-wheelers as commercial vehicles. They are demanding that the government either register their bikes commercially or implement its own 'Rent a Motorcycle Scheme, 1997' that permits renting out of bikes with private registration numbers.

Manali – Leh – Khardungla road is quite popular for bike riding. The season starts by June end right up till September.
