Over 5000 Participants Participated In The Fifth Leh Marathon

The recent marathon in Leh which happened on Thursday was concluded successfully. This is the fifth year of the Leh marathon as it began four years with just about 1500 participants; saw the participation of nearly 5,000 people. A seven-km-run for fun, a half marathon (21.1km), a full marathon (41.1km) and Khardungla Challenge (a 71.2 km-ultra marathon over the 17,617ft-high Khardung La pass -considered as the world's highest motorable road) were the four categories in the marathon.

Tsewang Toldan from the Ladakh Scouts, won the Khardongla Challenge'  in 6 hours 53 minutes and 35 seconds and Shabir Husain from Ladakh Scouts shared the award of the first position since both of the completed the race in 06:53:35. And the third prize was won by Illiyas from the Ladakh Scouts after completing the race in  7 hrs 23 minutes and 19 seconds.

 

Among the women, Sonam Casket won the first position by completing the Khardongla Challenge in 9 hours 41 minutes and 19.24 seconds, and Divaya who made it in 12:30:34 was ranked second. Parvin stood third by completing it in 13:15:28.

Leh Marathon

The winners of the full marathon which was of 41 KM in men's category were Jigmet Namgyal, Stanzin Norbu and Jigmet Norbu. They completed the race in 3:12:10, 3:17:05 and 3: 17: 18 respectively. And among the women’s team, the winner were Tsetan Dolkar, Shikha Pahwa, and Namgyal Lhamo, who made it in 3:34:26, 4:08:47 and 4:22:07 time respectively.

 

Nawang Tsering scored the race in 01:23:05's time and stood first, Tsewang Namgyal, who completed in 01:27:05, was declared second and Lundup Dorjay was third who made it in 01:27:56 in the half marathon section of the men's event. For the women’s team, the winners were Jigmet Dolma, Diskit Dolma and Tashi Ladol who completed the 21 km race in 1:39:31, 01:42:25 and 1:48:08 respectively. Indian politician, Nawang Rigzin Jora also participated just for fun in the seven-km race.

While appreciating Chewang Motup, who is the founder of the Ladakh Marathon, posted on his Facebook, “Participants had come from twenty different countries - from Scandinavian countries to America to Britain, etc. Very heartening to see a large number of participants from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and New Delhi. This has been his labor of love, his passion, and his way of giving back to the society.”
