Manali at an altitude of 2,050 m (6,726 ft.) in the Beas River Valley is a hill station nestled in the mountains of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh near the northern end of the Kullu Valley. It is located about 270 km (168 mi) north of the state capital, Shimla. Manali lies in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh state of India.
 
Paragliding is organized in Kullu valley throughout the year at Solang Valley, located 14 km from Manali and other locations like Marhi, Fatru, and Bijli Mahadev etc.

The sport is categorized into 3 flights:
 
Joy Ride – the flight takes place in the flying ground of Solang from an approximate height of 300 m above ground level and lasts for duration of approximately 3 minutes.
 
High Ride – this flight takes off from the mid slopes of Solang from an approximate height of 800 m above ground, provides a spectacular view of the pine filled slopes, the Beas River and the flying ground before landing safely. This flight lasts anywhere between 8 min to 15 min and above depending on the wind conditions.
 
Long Ride or The Cross Country Ride with Acrobatics– this flight takes off from the peaks of either Gulaba, Rothang, Biling or Madi from an approximate distance of 3 km, providing breath-taking view of the amazing mountains. Round and round the peaks like a high flying bird the glider enjoys the valleys and peaks of Gulaba, Bir, Biling, Madi, Rothang and Solang before making a descend into the flying ground of Solang. This flight lasts anywhere between 25 min to 1 hr. and above depending on the wind conditions.

Hand gliding and parachuting when combined is called paragliding. A paraglider has to run down the hill at 40 degree slope, the running results in air filling in the columns of the keel, this allow the glider to take off. The Solang valley slopes are perfectly made for paragliding.
 
When the weather conditions are perfect it is possible to stay in the air for more than three hours and rise to a height of 3000 m. The geographical conditions of Manali are conducive for all grades of paragliding. Any person above 15 years of age and weighing between 45 to 85 kg can paraglide.
