This scared sikh shrine is situated on the shores of the Hemkund Lake (4320mtrs.). It marks the place where Guru Govind Singh, the tenth and the last Guru, unified with God after prolonged meditation in his previous birth. The guru’s autobiography which contains a description of the place helped two devout Sikhs, Sant Sohan Singh and Havldar Mohan Singh to rediscover it. Hemkunt is a Sanskrit  name derived from Hem ("Snow") and kund ("bowl").
Hemkund Sahib (also spelled Hemkut), known as Gurudwara Sri Hemkunt Sahab Ji is a Sikh place of worship and pilgrimage site in Chamoli district of uttarakhand, India. It is devoted to Guru Gobind Singh Ji(1666-1708).
Hemkund trek is a 15 km way from Govidghat, which is the Gateway to the Bhyundar or Lakshman Ganga valley. Govindghat is one of the bus route to badrinath. The trek from here to hemkund takes one through forests of pine and rhododendron where wild roses, ferns and alpine flowers bloom. The surging waters of the Lakshman Ganga are also visibe. The last 5 km of the trek entails a steep climb from Ghangaria, which is a base for visiting Hemkund.
The lake of Hemkund is about 2km in circumference. Its clear crystal and still water make the trekker a biggest motivaton to the trekker to reach to its peak. Also it is surrounded by the beautiful Saptashringa peaks(5500mtrs.). bits of ice still floats on the water between the season of july and october, it is the best season to visit Hemkund. And it is all surrounded by the rock-strewn shores filled with moss and flowers in bloom.

.How to reach?-
 
1) By Road-  The take-off point for Hemkund Sahib is the town of Govindghat about 275 km from Rishikesh. The 13 km trek is along a reasonably well maintained path to the village of Ghangaria (also called Govinddham).
2) By Rail- The closest railway station is of rishikesh, which is well connected with the various main cities of india, like delhi, ghazaiabd, dehradun etc.
3) By Air- Jolly Grant airport is the nearest airport to Hemkund trek. But the roads are only connected upto Govind ghat from where you have to commence the trek of 15 km to reach Hemkund. Govindghat is sitauated of 292 km of jolly grant.
